People playing sac decks make me not want to play commander at all. playing a 2 and a half hour game cause someone takes 25 min turns trying to figure out how to sac their stuff and bring it back is some of the most boring gameplay of any game.

Theme decks that tell stories through gameplay are amazing fun. No. They don't win very much but the games they play in are all better for it. A Douglas Adams themed W/artifact deck was hilarious to play against. They were Arthur's house, their opponents were the bypass (government) and Tim (any Tim) was Arthur. Their Commander was Marvin (I forget which legend) supported by multitudes of insane contraptions and all the sorceries and instants never killed anything, only manipulated "reality" often randomly represented the improbability drive. It had pan galactic gargle blasters and an army of token Beeblebrox. It was a work of art _and_ could win a game or two if it wasn't shut down but most times the government won.

Clearly you should do the mature strategy of making an infinite blink loop with Agent of Treachery and just *stealing* all the land on the table. Far classier.

I would say it fits because in this case "commander" is a freeing limitation. It expands the idea away from such a limiting factor and makes sure the cards can be used in other formats. I will push back on the idea that the addition of the word commander is so they can sell more packs. Respectfully this is a brain dead point that merely panders to the "I hate WotC/capitalism/commander" crowd. The cards need to be responsibly limited in 60 card formats i.e. assassins. Being able to use it with your commander frees it a bit but no where near the extent that some light think. Sure everyone rubs a commander. But how many decks use a commander that doesn't attack consistently? At that point you're either in a deck that wants their commander to attack OR you're putting your commander in danger. Risk/reward system.

Following the spirit of the law, I see it like this: I feel like the text mentioning your commander in a "Lieutenant" ability could just as well have been relegated to a reminder text and vice versa for Freerunning, thus making it fine to use in my eyes.

I'm playing less fleshbag marauder type of cards. Playing too many of them are fun for me, but feels very stax-y for the opponent. Dictate of Erobos are a no go for me. I've had Savra, the Golgari Queen unalive a Tolbrand that is indestructible (with a mana barb on the board) 3 times in the same game, but it also unalive a precon commander 3 times while they're flooding in the same sequence. Those cards either doesn't do anything or takes out all agency of the opponent.

As a person who also owns burakos /folk hero frontline medic saves me 10 mana from recasting burakos and saves me from sacrificing my selfless spirit to gain 2-4 treasures.

Just say you're using old powerful cards. Then you jinx them because they are too. Have fun.

Akim, the soaring wind was the most disappointing legend for me in recent years, why do i only get 1 extra bird when i make tokens!? And its not even a big bird! Just a 1/1! Ugh angry

I don't find this that hard. If it doesn't get me to where I want to go _and_ fit the theme, doesn't matter how good it is, out. I'll get to 100, playtest and it's the swapping cards around that gets me into trouble. What did I want in tests? What didn't I want? Can I be consistent? More efficient? What are my blind spots? That part takes hours of agony.

Make a deck that’s thematic, don’t expect it to be competitive. Make a a deck that’s competitive, don’t expect it to be anything else. I really want this commander to be good, but I feel like I never get to play because the good cards are so expensive, and the deck feels completely useless when Obeka isn't in play. It's sad because this is one of the most interesting effects on any commander. I'll check this list out, but if anyone has a not-terrible deck list for her, please let me know. I would love to be able to have some fun with it!

Galadriels dismissal is my new favorite for voltron. Easy to keep thenone mana open and just as effective for your voltron commander. It also works in a pinch for temporary enemy creature removal, and of course can be overloaded.

I don't think magic is that complex.

I mean i am not going to care if someone plays a "crab" deck then throws a bunch of none crab instants sorceries and enchantments at me. i am sure not going to look at their land choices and be like thats not crabs. I do expect that if someone tells me they are playing a crab deck that they are going to attempt to kick my ass with crabs if they combo out 5th turn i am probably going to get up from the table and attempt to join another table. Combos is what kills the fun of playing magic. No one and I mean no one has had fun in a game when everyone is at 40 HP and some dude combos out 4th turn I am going to get up and leave.

I think it's your theme do what you want, but with the number of new freerunning cards your commander commander deck might just become an assassins creed deck with a few backgrounds if you're not careful

Not sure i'd agree with the statement that you can't really 'metagame' if you see a higher variety of decks. the trends in the (bigger) meta are just more balanced and not quiet as severe. For example using more boardwipes as a result of everyone playing ward cards is still metagaming. Its just a bigger meta you're adapting to.

Sneak attack is not an auto include into kaalia unless she has a recursion sub theme. It cost you much mana and kills your beaters.

Protection cards are rough because they are always almost made pointless by having another counterspell. Obviously, non blue doesn't have many of those options. They really could throw out more tibalt trickery type cards to all colors, or make the protection cantrip much more useful so that it isn't always dead. Galadriel's dismissal is starting to get close. One mana to protect your commander or remove a problem creature for a turn, or doing it for a players entire set of creatures is nice flexibility. To make it really useful, it needed the "players can't win the game" on it too, though.

Unfortunately the problen is unless you all agree you are playing precons you will have people that get angry becuase they are sinply not as good at the game. I often play gates or shrines and have people in the pod that say oh your playing a 10.

I implore you guys to stop advertising for Better Help. I love your content but they are professional grifters and people who genuinely need help will almost never find it there.

I had a conversation with a local buddy that was real close to this. I think we boiled down to "Building a to play a game that's suboptimal fun and being ruthless to win" and "Building to play at the strongest decks you can build so that you can just run games for fun". The first is like "we all got a precon, I'm kicking your ass!" And the other is like "we come in with the expectation of power, therefore we can just let the cards play as they fall; you knew what you were stepping into when we started". Both are ABSOLUTELY VALID, and when everyone is open and starting the games on the same page. The problem is when people think they're playing one but building a deck that rests with the other; accidentally or intentionally. Example for EDH settings: It's one thing to run Miiriym, another to play Roaming throne; it's also OK to run both in the same deck. But if you're running them together: the "Chad" play is to play Roaming throne first, then Miiriam. You're absolutely being "unfun" if you play Miiriym first. You're especially an asshole if you do so, in multiple games, and you recall how the triggers result and what will be the consequences of that two piece combo, but you bungle and fiddlefart your turn clock mapping it out. FYI, Miirym then RT(Dragon) will make three RT. This means each dragon you cast after will result in 4 individual permanents per cast and 16 ETB effects. RT then Miirym just makes miiryms effect get copied once (so three permanents per cast) and 6 ETB triggers. It's still really strong but alot more fair than the alternative and easier to manage. Also, each RT triggers an addition ward cost, including stacking for RT, they just don't count themselves.

So I’m a bit different. My playgroup was built from scratch with mostly new players. The downside, is that in most rules interactions, there are only a couple of us who even have a vague idea of what’s going on. Because of this, as they learn the game naturally over time, I find myself helping them meta-game against me, and then finding ways to break the interactions. For example, my favorite commander is stickfingers, I can one shot a play for 21 on turn 3-4. So I bought a ground seal, a RIP, tormud’s crypt, and built a custom selesnya deck with Kutzil that absolutely rips on counterspells and graveyard decks. Then I gave it to another player. After a few games I started finding out how to balance myself to survive against the extreme graveyard hate. So I have added cards like elixir of immortality and some instant speed retrieval. As a result, my deck is slower and more manageable for the table, but also more resilient to hate pieces. I’ve kind of been doing this with every deck in some way. I built a deck called “Death Beyond the Fog” on archidekt when the table started loving the commander damage route, and showed them why they need secondary win conditions 😂

Y'all, I really enjoy the podcast but when are you going to stop promoting BetterHelp? Like, how many times should they be exposed for terrible practices that actively harm people for you to stop accepting their promo?

One of my top favorite Commanders is my Narset, Enlightened Exile deck. Arcane Denial was the top pick for a Counterspell in the deck for its level of flexibility. The majority of the Noncreature Spells in the deck are usable in and out the Graveyard with Narset’s ability, but not all do (other Counterspells included). I could even hit a card in an opponent’s Graveyard with Narset and Counter it with Arcane Denial if I don’t have use for it myself, and draw a bunch of cards off it. No matter what I would get all the Prowess triggers and draw cards.

i've played several card games throughout my life and i've never, in any other tcg, had to tell who i'm playing against what's in my deck, and most of those games you would have ZERO idea what the other person is playing until they start playing cards. At least with commander you see what commander they are playing so you know what colors they are playing and, depending on your knowledge of the game, have a rough idea what cards might be in their deck. If anything I think its better you dont know whats in your opponents deck because it teaches you about potentially powerful cards that they play that way you remember what they are and know what to look out for in the future. Salt levels don't change just because you tell someone in advance you have some strong bomb of a card in your deck before you play it. I just had a game where two people Cyclonic Rift'ed me and I ended up scooping cause I didn't wanna rebuild a third time. They never told me they had that card in their decks but I assumed they did cause they were both in blue and I wouldn't have been any happier being hit by it twice if I knew about it first.

I love playing Walking Atlas and Terrain Generator. Great for mono color decks and decks with a lot of cars draw. Gives a way to put those lands you draw onto the board. Works great in my Shabraz deck and my mono white deck.

I find the topic is really dependent on what kind of backup plans/ redundancy we're talking about: counters can double in the place of protection spells for instance. But then again, I have a Selesnya- token- deck that is running 10 anthems and another 5 overruns, and that turned out to be the density it needed to go over the top

Challenge: there are almost two dozen of us running our Slogurk the Overslime decks with Jace, the Perfected Mind. And there should be more. I adore every use case for this guy. 3 mana, mill 3, draw 1 is fine. 3 mana, mill 3, draw 3 rules. 3 mana, mill 9 is good. 4 mana, mill 3, draw 3 is good. 4 mana, mill 15 is a lil baby Cut Your Losses. And I especially like when I get to use him twice. 4 mana, mill 6, draw 2, 4, or 6. Heck, I've even used his uptick to stop 6 damage from a double-strike critter. There should be dozens of us!

Idk. I have 1-3 back-up plans in my decks that could replace or compliment my commander.

I dispute Frontline Medic being overplayed. I use it to attack all 3 players and pressure life totals.

If my Commander has the payoff built-in, my 99 will focus on setup. If my Commander has the setup built-in, my 99 will focus on payoff.

My point on why I drop Sol Ring is that it's like...not just busted, but busted enough that it's several steps of 'fixes' away from being printable. 1 mana taps for 1? No, too good, can't print it. 1 mana taps for 1, comes into play tapped? Still too good, can't do that either. 2 mana taps for 2? Whoa buddy that's STILL too good. 3 mana tap for 2? Maybe. With a downside. Possibly.

I've noticed I am enjoying Landcycling on creatures a ton. I'm putting a lot more basics in decks.
